California is many different things to many different people. When one thinks of the majestic and eternally sunny state that faces the Pacific Ocean, horses and horse riding does not generally come to mind. People envision the glitz and glamour of Rodeo Drive, and the iconic Hollywood sign that hovers above Los Angeles; in their mind’s eye they can see lush vineyards and the rugged cliffs along the Pacific Coast Highway. Who thinks about horses?

North of Los Angeles, however, is the beautiful community of Burbank. Burbank is a dream location if you are serious about riding and maintaining horses. To think that a bucolic community that specializes in riding culture exists a short distance from smog-clogged Los Angeles is amazing. It is a hidden jewel for those who take riding seriously. The Rancho Equestrian area of Burbank has between 1,200 and 1,400 homes; each one of these houses is specially zoned to allow horses. Furthermore, the Rancho Equestrian area is also home to Griffith Park, which has 4,800 acres and over 54 miles of horse trails. The Rancho Equestrian area of Burbank is like a stage set for the Wild West. You can take your horses anywhere you want.

Shoes, handbags and more. Women (and men) all love to shop. When you are going out for a day of shopping and want to find the best deals around, head to a local town center and round up all the deals you can find. At the beginning of summer find specials on summer wear such as shorts, tops and shoes. You may be amazed that the stars frequent the same places you do! Even stars like a good deal and you might even be wearing the same blouse or pair of jeans as your favorite actor or actress. Teenagers follow the current trends and a local town center is the place to go for the latest and greatest fashion. The fashion industry knows that whatever style is hot at the moment needs to be in stores quickly. Looking for an outfit for that special occasion? Need a wedding ensemble? You can purchase these and so much more at a local town center. Everything from shoes to ties and everything in between. Add a piece of jewelry to complete your outfit. After shopping, take a break and have a bite to eat at one of the various food courts or restaurants.

Johnny Carson is definitely a part of the history of Burbank. When the tonight show first aired it was based in New York City. The show eventually moved to Burbank in May of 1972. Ed McMahon was Carson’s side kick on the show. He would introduce Carson, with the now infamous heeeere’s Johnny! He also warmed up the audience before the show commenced.

The Carson bandleader was Doc Severinsen. He led the band from 1967 in New York and then moved to Burbank with Carson and continued on until 1992. Once the move was made to Burbank, Monday became known as the guest host night, in Burbank. Joan Rivers and Jay Leno were two of the prominent, permanent guest hosts. Leno, is currently the host of the show.

While Carson hosted the show, he was responsible for launching the careers of a number of stars. Most were comedians. Some of these comedians, to name a few are Jerry Seinfeld, Jeff Foxworthy, Ellen Degeneres, Tim Allen, and Roseanne Barr. Carson was extremely intuitive when it came to finding real talent.

Johnny hosted the show for a total of 30 years. Twenty of these were in Burbank. Carson also received many awards for his work, including six emmys. In 1992, he was honored with the Presidential Medal Of Freedom. This is the same year that Carson officially retired from the tonight show.

Bob’s Big Boy Restaurant located in Burbank, California is an example of Googie architecture that emerged in the 1950′s. This casual fun coffee house style of restaurant is related to the pavilions in the World’s Fair that are low with a horizontal roof. The freestanding sign on the restaurant is a unique feature that tourists will notice. The sign is vertical in relation to the low horizontal roof. The sign has pink and white letters that are neon. It can be seen from several streets away. The sign on the building is like a billboard advertising the restaurant. The sign is 70 feet tall. When light at night this sign attracts tourists to stop for something to eat at the diner with its unusual design.

This building was built by two local men Scott MacDonald and Ward Albert. The architect that designed this building was Wayne McAllister. In 1993 it was named as a state historical point by the state of California. The restaurant has car hop service and car shows on the weekends. The walkways around the building are green and black terazzo. It is a combination sit down restaurant and drive in with booths inside. It has a steel shaped awning on the building that give it this Googie architecture look.
